Ed Colaianni passed away in November 2008, in Karlsruhe, Germany, from pancreatic cancer. He was a close collaborator and invaluable supporter of TecNica in the 1980’s.
Ed set up a state of the art telecommunications systems for the Berkeley and Managua offices of TecNica, long before the Internet, email, and the World Wide Web were household words. Ed was also a friend to many TecNica Volunteers, who held a memorial for him in Berkeley in 2008 after his death. Click here to read Mark Wieder’s tribute to Ed, given at Ed’s memorial gathering in Berkeley in January of 2009. Ed made countless contributions to TecNica, though we only have information on a few of them.
Ed lived in Nicaragua in the 1980’s, where he was one of the founders of the telecommunications node, Nicarao, at CRIES. Ed worked closely with the communications department at the National University (UNI).
Later, he moved to Karlsruhe, Germany, and was active in software development and translations. He leaves behind his former wife, Christa, and their 15-year-old daughter.
If you remember Ed and would like to share some pictures of him or written reflections, we are sure that other friends would like to see them. Please help us fill in the details of his contributions through the Comments section at the bottom of this page. Thank you!
